William John Brownlow Riddell is believed to have been born in 1899 . He was educated at the Glasgow Academy, Scotland before attending the University of Glasgow, graduating MB ChB in 1923. He then attended the Royal London Ophthalmic Hospital, England, graduating with a Diploma in Ophthalmic Medicine and Surgery in 1928 . He qualified MD in 1940 .
